Position Summary:

The Accountant is responsible for maintaining the financial integrity of the café and bistro by ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective cost control, regulatory compliance and efficient management of revenue, expenses, payroll, inventory and cash flow. The role supports management in making sound financial decisions while safeguarding the restaurant’s assets.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management

  • Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Prepare daily, weekly and monthly financial reports.
  • Produce monthly management accounts, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets and cash flow reports.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, petty cash and supplier statements.
  • Prepare journal entries and maintain the general ledger.

Revenue & Cash Control

  • Monitor daily sales from the POS system and reconcile them with cash, bank deposits, and electronic payments.
  • Ensure all revenue is accurately recorded.
  • Investigate and report any cash shortages, overages or irregularities.
  • Conduct spot cash counts where necessary.
  • Monitor gift vouchers, discounts, complimentary meals, and promotional offers to prevent revenue leakage.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

  • Verify supplier invoices against purchase orders and goods received notes.
  • Process supplier payments within approved timelines.
  • Monitor outstanding receivables for corporate clients, events and catering services.
  • Maintain accurate vendor and customer account records.

Inventory & Cost Control

  • Work closely with the Executive Chef and Operations Manager to monitor food, beverage, and operating costs.
  • Conduct periodic inventory reconciliations.
  • Analyse food cost percentage, beverage cost percentage and wastage.
  • Investigate stock variances and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support menu pricing analysis based on food cost and profitability.

Budgeting & Financial Analysis

  • Assist in preparing annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to improve profitability.
  • Prepare variance reports and explain significant deviations.

Compliance & Audit

  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Prepare schedules for internal and external audits.
  • Maintain proper financial documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to internal financial controls and company policies.

Internal Controls

  • Develop and maintain effective financial control procedures.
  • Monitor compliance with approval limits and procurement procedures.
  • Identify financial risks and recommend mitigation measures.
  • Support fraud prevention initiatives.

Business Support

  • Provide financial insights to management for strategic decision-making.
  • Participate in cost reduction and operational improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Membership of a recognised accounting professional body is desirable.

Experience:

  • 3–5 years’ accounting experience, preferably in hospitality, fine dining, luxury hotels, or food and beverage operations.
  • Experience with restaurant POS systems and inventory management software.
  • Experience in financial reporting and cost accounting.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent understanding of accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or ERP systems).
